Ljubljana & beyond

Six day trips from Ljubljana.

A hill for sunrise, a city for lunch, a gorge for the afternoon. Everything below starts at Medenska cesta 8, with realistic driving times.

01 — The base

The advantage of sleeping outside the centre.

Staying in Šentvid puts the motorway, the airport and the hills on the same side of the city. You can climb Šmarna gora before breakfast, be in the old town by eleven, and still be back for dinner on the terrace. These six plans are the ones we recommend most often to guests who ask what is worth the drive.

Times are typical for a normal weekday. In summer, leave earlier for Bled and Vintgar; in winter, check the opening hours of the gorge before setting out.

Six day trips from Ljubljana.

  1. Šmarna gora at sunrise

    2.5 km to the trailhead · 5 min drive · 2–3 hours

Šmarna gora is the hill you can see from the courtyard, and the walk up is a Ljubljana ritual. Drive the two and a half kilometres to the trailhead, then follow the marked path through beech and oak to the church and the two inns on the summit. The main route takes about an hour at an easy pace; the descent is quicker.

Go early. On a clear morning the whole Ljubljana basin sits below you in blue light, with the castle on its hill and the Kamnik Alps behind. Bring a head torch in autumn, and check the weather — the path is steep in places and slippery after rain.

Breakfast at the summit inn, then walk down before the Sunday crowds arrive.

  2. Ljubljana old town in a day

    6.5 km · 12 min drive · full day

Park near Tivoli Park and walk into the centre along the Ljubljanica. The old town is compact enough to cover on foot: Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge, the market colonnade, the riverside cafés and the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle. Allow an hour for the castle and its views, and another for a long lunch.

In the afternoon, cross to the quieter side of the river around the Križanke and the National Library, or walk back through Tivoli and its chestnut avenues. If you are travelling with children, the park has playgrounds and the castle has a good picnic lawn.

The market closes in the early afternoon; buy fruit and bread before lunch, not after.

  3. Bled and Vintgar

    55 km · 45 min drive · full day

Bled is the postcard, and it is worth seeing once — but the lake path is best before ten, when the coaches arrive. Walk the six-kilometre circuit, take a pletna boat to the island if the queue is short, and keep the castle for a later visit if time is tight.

The Vintgar gorge is a fifteen-minute drive from the lake. A wooden boardwalk follows the Radovna through a narrow limestone ravine to the Šum waterfall. The full route is about 1.6 kilometres each way; sturdy shoes are a good idea even in summer.

Buy a timed Vintgar ticket online in July and August; the gorge closes in winter.

  4. An airport stopover that feels like a holiday

    13 km · 15 min drive · one night

The airport is close enough that the last night of a trip can be a proper one. Drop the car, sleep in a quiet home rather than a terminal hotel, and take a short taxi or drive to Brnik in the morning. Self check-in runs until 23:59, so late arrivals from Frankfurt or Istanbul are not a problem.

With an afternoon to spare, walk up Šmarna gora or drive into Šentvid for dinner at Gostilna Kaval. It is a far better use of a stopover than another airport lounge.

Allow 25 minutes for the return of a hire car and the terminal walk before a morning flight.

  5. Cycling along the Sava

From the gate · 2–4 hours · easy to moderate

The flat roads along the Sava, north of Šentvid, are a good introduction to cycling around Ljubljana. Head east towards Ježica and Črnuče for a gentle riverside loop, or west towards Medvode for a longer ride with a few short climbs. The paths are a mix of quiet lanes and signed cycle routes.

Bicycles can be parked under cover at the homes. Bring water and a repair kit; the nearest bike shop is in Šentvid, not on the river path. For a shorter outing, combine the ride with a stop at the Šmarna gora trailhead and walk the last part on foot.

The riverside path is exposed; start early in July and take more water than you think.

  6. Kranj and Škofja Loka

About 30–35 min drive · half day

Two small historic towns, both within half an hour of the homes, make an easy half-day away from Ljubljana. Kranj has a dramatic position above the Kokra gorge and a compact old town; Škofja Loka has one of the best-preserved medieval squares in Slovenia, with a castle and a stone bridge.

Go to Kranj first, then drive on to Škofja Loka for lunch. The roads are straightforward and the driving is short enough to leave the afternoon free for the courtyard.

Park outside the old towns and walk in; both centres are small and pedestrian-friendly.

A note on times. Driving times are typical weekday estimates from Medenska cesta 8. Traffic on the Ljubljana ring road and the A2 towards the airport can add ten to twenty minutes between 07:00 and 09:00. Distances to Kranj and Škofja Loka are approximate.

Stay a little longer

Two nights is enough for the hill. Three is better.
